Branch of the History of Katowice Museum opens

A great opening of the History of Katowice Museum took place today in the Nikiszowiec district. The renovated building is a seat of the Museum’s branch – “the Ethnology of the City” Section. The project of the Museum’s renewal called “A heart of Nikiszowiec” is a part of the district revitalization.

The Museum’ branch was renovated thanks to approximately PLN 3 million from the EU funds (European Regional Development Fund)

Nikiszowiec pronounced Monument of History

Nikiszowiec, a former workers housing estate was registered last week as the Monument of History and became 41st monument of Poland at the list. Also it is an important step in efforts to register this unique complex as the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Monuments Preservation Council had accepted the district’s candidature in March last year. Then the application was submitted for a final agreement by the President of Poland.

A heart of Nikiszowiec

Approximately PLN 3,2 million of EU fund was granted last year for a renovation of an old mangel building in Nikiszowiec district as the new History of Katowice Museum unit. Following PLN 600 000 was donated by the City Hall. Thanks to the funds the renovation is currently progressing. Two storeys of the building and a basement will be modernly equipped covering area of 1 100 sq. m. About 400 sq. m is planned for temporary and constant expositions.

“Szyb Wilson” Gallery

A rich heritage of industrial development of past centuries have left Katowice with a high concentration of historical-industrial objects. Recent investments in the revitalization of old industrial sites are helping the City to reform its image. Another great example is the Szyb Wilson (Wilson Shaft) art gallery in the Nikiszowiec district. Located in a former mine shaft of the Wieczorek coal mine, the gallery is an investment by real estate firm Pro-Invest.

Two Katowice districts will be in ERIH

The Industrial Monuments Route of the Silesian Viovodeship including Nikiszowiec and Giszowiec, the two of Katowice districts, will be a part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH). The Silesian Industrial Monuments Route exists since three years and comprises 31 selected facilities of exceptional historic and architectural interest, which in the previous centuries were milestones of industrial revolution.
