The City Hall invites all architectural studios to the two-staged procedure. In the first instance, the companies will have to meet strict requirements of the tender concerning, among others, theirs economic situation, architectural experience and number of employees. Then, the City will invite five chosen studios to the second stage. To choose the winner, the tender committee will take into consideration the price and the quality of architectural project proposed by the designing firms. “The projects have to be based on the concept design of the consortium of GPP Grupa Projektowa and Agencja Projektowa Architektury EKSPO, and have to include suggestions made by the competition jury” – said Michał Buszek, city architect of Katowice.

The consortium of GPP and EKSPO won the second prize in the international competition for the architectural concept of the Market Sq. – Roundabout’s public spaces that was decided at the beginning of July. The jury did not award the first prize winner as none of the competing studios had presented a sufficient and convincing design of the area. As there were no winner, the public procurement law says the City Hall has to issue the tender procedure to select a new designer.

According to Piotr Uszok, Katowice mayor, the tender will be decided in the turn of 2012 and 2013. “The chosen architectural studio will prepare a complete design documentation including all administrative decisions and permissions enabling to issue a bidding procedure for a prime contractor and to start the construction work. We hope to kick-off in the middle of the next year”. At first, the works will be conducted on the square situated between the “Zenit” and “Młyńska 1” buildings. Also, a road infrastructure’s project for the Market Sq. – Roundabout has to be made up while designing the public spaces. All the investments will be executed within the second stage of the City Center redevelopment.

The first stage of works – the modernization and rebuilding of tramway tracks and surrounding infrastructure between the Market Sq. – Roundabout – is being currently conducted by the consortium of two building companies, NDI and Balzola. The stage is scheduled to be delivered in the first quarter of 2013.
