Grupa 5 will design WRiTV seat

Today, the Katowice Branch of the Association of Polish Architects (SARP Katowice) decided an architectural and urban contest of a new seat of the Krzysztof Kieślowski Radio and Television Faculty (WRiTV), the University of Silesia in Katowice nationwide unit. From amongst sixty-nine qualified architectural studios, thirty-nine filed theirs projects. The first prize went to the “Grupa 5 Architekci” studio from Warsaw.

According to the jury, the chosen project performs conditions mentioned in the contest outlines. Additionally, it was appreciated for an internal patio which is opened for circulation zones and didactics rooms of the Faculty. The jury explained that the patio and the building’s structure created around would be a suitable place for events of students and artists, which is necessary for this type of scientific unit. Also the project was awarded for the facade’s design referring to tradition and local landscape.

“We are positively surprised. It is worth to mention our colleagues from Spain who were preparing the project with us. They contributed a Spanish style to the design. Our aim was to create a building which is harmonized with the City and where the space diffuses between interiors and the outside. That is why we used a transparent texture on the elevation” – said Kacper Gronkiewicz, Architect at “Grupa 5 Architekci”.

The front elevation will be made of brick and will create a row. The same brick is used in the neighbouring buildings. The new Faculty will be concentrated in the four-storey front part. The back two-storey construction was lowered to correspond with surroundings. The project uses whole destined 2 258 sq. meters plot where the patio is a central part of the complex. It will cover a total area of 5 388,5 sq. meters including an underground car park. A two-storey film studio, projection room, and photo, montage, sound workrooms will be put at students disposal. The building will cost approximately PLN 20 million.
